Octopus and Avocado Salad Recipe

Ingredients needed

This type of salad is very easy and quick to make, especially since you can buy the octopus already cooked. But for those who are looking for something more gourmet, we recommend buying it frozen for special cooking and creating a sauce to dress the salad:

Ingredients for the dressing:

  • Octopus broth
  • A cooked octopus tentacle
  • 1 tomato
  • 2 cloves of garlic.
  • 1 tablespoon of wheat flour.
  • Olive oil.
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce.
  • Salt

For the Salad

  • 1/2 purple onion.
  • 1 Paprika.
  • 1 tomato.
  • 1/2 Avocado.
  • Olive oil.
  • Ground black pepper.
  • Cooked octopus tentacles.
  • Fresh coriander.
  • Lemon extract.
  • Vinegar.

Instructions

Boil your octopus

This is a crucial part for this octopus salad, since special care must be taken when boiling it so that it is at the correct point. We thaw the octopus by massaging it and bathing it with tap water at room temperature, this is done to ensure that the muscles thaw without being damaged.

The next thing will be to prepare the water, add red wine vinegar to the pot (don’t add the water yet), some lemon slices and two previously crushed garlic cloves. Take them to high heat and add the octopus into this mixture, let it cook for about 10 minutes, or until the octopus contracts.

After this add a few cups of water and let the temperature increase until the water begins to boil. Lower the flame and cook for at least two hours, make sure the octopus is tender and then let it rest.

When it is at a lower temperature you should cut it, preferably with good scissors to guarantee its integrity. Finally refrigerate so that the meat is tense and ends up with an ideal texture to taste a salad, remember to save your broth for the dressing.

Prepare the dressing

Now it was time to prepare the dressing, we started by boiling the tomato and cutting one of the tentacles into smaller pieces. When the tomato is ready, we take it out and add it to a food processor or blender together with the octopus pieces.

Add the garlic, a tablespoon of olive oil, the soy sauce, the tablespoon of wheat flour and finally the octopus broth. Mash everything to create a dressing, the consistency should be a bit crumbly, add a pinch of salt to balance the flavors.

When it is ready you will only have to refrigerate it a little, remember that it should be like a lumpy paste, it should not be liquid. If it is the case, you can pass it through a pan to cook it a little and remove the moisture, this also adds some flavor.

Cut all the ingredients

Now it’s time to start preparing the salad, cutting all the ingredients very carefully. The tomato, paprika and avocado should be cut into small cubes, the same way they are cut to make mincemeat salad.

Cut the purple onion into short strips, you can cut the octopus into squares, slices or half moon, it all depends on how you want it. Although aesthetically speaking, the best option would be to cut it into a half moon, this consists of making slices and dividing them in half.

Now we mix all the chopped ingredients, except the avocado, and add the dressing little by little, you should not add too much of this to the salad. Squeeze half a lemon and add its extract to the salad, a little vinegar, olive oil and ground black pepper.

Finally add the avocado and coriander, it is done this way so as not to spoil the avocado while the other ingredients are mixed. Stir very carefully and voila, you can enjoy your octopus salad, add a little more lemon if you like.

How to serve and accompany this salad?
Because it’s packed with protein, healthy fats, and vegetables, it counts as a main dish for any meal. It could also be an excellent dinner or a snack that brings a lot of energy, without a doubt it will be perfect for any occasion.

One of the best options would be to accompany it with some toasted bread, add some butter, garlic and let it toast a little. You can eat it as a snack, alone or add it to accompany a fish fillet.
